Celebrating National Summit Day with These Epic US Peaks

The start of August brings National Summit Day, a moment to honor every uphill battle that ends with a view. Whether you’ve trekked ten miles to the top of a mountain or simply carried groceries up your city’s steepest hill, this day celebrates the grit it takes to reach new heights.

To mark the occasion, we’re spotlighting a few legendary summits across the US. These peaks promise jaw-dropping views, unforgettable experiences, and maybe a little burn in the calves. So grab your sunscreen, bug spray, and plenty of water — it’s time to summit something great.

half dome

Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California

This one’s iconic for a reason. The 14 to 16-mile round trip to Half Dome takes most hikers 10 to 12 hours to complete and includes a 4,800-foot elevation gain. The payoff? Sweeping views of Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada that will leave you speechless - if the climb didn’t already. The final stretch features the famous cables route, a thrilling ascent that’s not for the faint of heart. Start early, set a hard turnaround time, and savor the challenge. Every step is worth it.

Desolation Peak, North Cascades National Park, Washington

With a name that sounds intense and views that absolutely are, Desolation Peak is a remote gem in the North Cascades. The 9.4-mile out-and-back hike gains 4,400 feet of elevation and rewards you with sweeping views of Ross Lake, the Picket Range, and wildflower-studded meadows. At the summit, you’ll find a historic fire lookout once used by author Jack Kerouac - a perfect place to reflect on the climb. This one’s a mental reset wrapped in a physical challenge.

Stony Man Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Not every summit needs to be a test of endurance. Stony Man Mountain offers an approachable 3.7-mile loop with just under 900 feet of elevation gain - and delivers some of the most stunning views in Shenandoah. From the top, you’ll see rolling green ridgelines, the George Washington National Forest, and layers of the Appalachian Mountains fading into the distance. It’s a perfect intro summit for families, beginners, or anyone craving a beautiful payoff without the epic slog.
